Zambrano-Montes also allegedly tossed rocks at the officers, before running across the street. As he fled alongside the VInny's, police pursued him. Then, Zambrano-Montes turned, appeared to put his hands in the air and was shot to death. His memorial sits just outside the cafe.

After Zambrano-Montes was shot, Vinny's Bakery and Cafe was all over the news. Residents and out-of-towners flocked to the memorial to pay their respects, and yet few people have walked an extra three or four steps to come inside, Marin said.

'Something big happened, so people are scared,' he told Mashable. 'I don't know if we're going to close or go out of business.'

Marin's cafe closed on Friday, and rumors spread through Pasco that Vinny's doors might not open again, or that it would be shut down for the foreseeable future. But the cafe opened again on Saturday, ahead of an afternoon protest against the police shooting of Zambrano-Montes that started right outside its doors. Vinny's was open in the days after the shooting, and Marin gave free bread to anyone who came by, trying to help Pasco grieve in the best way he knew.

Several residents say it's unfortunate that business at Vinny's has faltered in the nearly two weeks since the shooting.

'This guy worked really hard for what he has,' Ben Patrick, a Pasco resident, told Mashable. 'He's a very nice gentleman and for him to go through this for something as silly as that, it's just wrong.'

Some in the community have done everything they can to support the cafe, Marin said. Police officers pooled some money, and brought it down to him on Friday. Marin's friends and others in Pasco have also donated what they could.

Others have suggested that Marin move his cafe to a different spot in Pasco, but he said he doesn't have the money to do that. Food is his passion, and Marin has been working 14 to 16 hours each day to keep his dream going.

Marin forced a smile when he thought about the people who gave him donations over the past few days, but could barely get out a few words before stopping himself from crying.

Shaking his head, he said he fears all their effort may not be enough to save Vinny's.

'I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart,' Marin said, 'The people, the community, the police and my friends — they help me, but people aren't coming to buy this.'
